Twilight Tales...

Jan. 19th 2008

When Dad upgraded and put in the new projectors with the carbon arch's, he thought he was in seventh heaven. He'd leave one machine running- get out his putter and a couple of balls - go out on the carpet and practice putting while the reel ran. Sometimes he'd get so carried away, he'd forget to look at the time left on the projector. The screen would go blank, the crowd would laugh and start stomping their feet on the wooden floors - Dad, of course, would hear, start up the other projector, the crowd would cheer and all would be well.

When we were out there last, I pointed out to John Janssen (board member) the steel pipe that ran from the ticket booth to the projector room - this was how Mom and I (the official popcorn girl) would communicate to Dad upstairs. John always wondered what it was for.
I also pointed out to him the hidden wooden drawer in the staircase. It was where we would stash the money we needed for the next night's cash drawers - it was installed by my Granddad when the staircase was built.

I have much interest in what you're doing with what you refer to as "the old girl." I'm sure my Grandfather and Father might balk at that term......

Also....maybe one note of interest.....the one loan building left standing on Main was the residence of Ben, Kathryn, Con and Suzan Spainhour while they ran the Twilight. We would often stand in the windows upstairs to watch the tornadoes approaching Greensburg from the Southwest. Mom and us kids would go to the basement when they got too close - Dad always said, "A tornado won't take this old building down," and he'd stay. Guess he was right!
